4.     Sheng Jiang – 生姜

Latin species Zingiber officinale Rosc.

Action:  Studies have shown its effectiveness in relieving pain for women suffering from menstrual cramps. Helps to ease various gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomit and diarrhoea.

Precaution: Not suitable for individuals suffering from fever or hot flushes, late nights or breathlessness.

 

5.     Wu Zhu Yu – 吴茱萸

English/ Common name Medicinal Evodia Fruit

Latin species Evodia rutaecarpa (Juss.) Benth

Action: Commonly used to ease menstrual symptoms including nausea, headaches, edema. Helps to relieve headachesand a wide range of digestive problems including chronic diarrhoea and vomit. 

Precaution/s Not suitable for pregnant women or for those who intend to try to conceive.

 

6.     Rou Gui – 肉桂

English/ Common name Chinese cinnamon

Latin species Cinnamomum cassia Presl

Park of plant used Bark

Action: Traditionally used to treat menstrual cramps, impotency, chest pain, backaches and frequent urination. Reports showed that it had anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic and anti-cancer effects.

Precaution: Avoid during pregnancy. Use with caution in patients with bleeding tendency. Incompatible with Halloysitum Rubrum.

 

For convenient option, try Wuji Baifeng Wan which consist of a blend of herbs that helps to regulate your menstruation.

 

Wuji Baifeng Wan– 乌鸡白凤is a blackish-brown pill used in Traditional Chinese medicine to “replenish “qi” and blood , regulate menstruation and arrest excessive leukorrhea” It is slightly aromatic and tastes sweet and slightly bitter. It is used where there is “deficiency of both “qi” and blood marked by emaciation and general feebleness, aching and limpness of loins and knees, disorders of menstruation with abnormal uterine bleeding and excessive leukorrhea “. The binding agent of the pill is honey.

 

If you visit the Western Physician

 

A number of nonprescription (over-the-counter) agents can help control the pain as well as actually prevent the menstrual cramps themselves. For mild cramps, aspirin or acetaminophen (Tylenol), or acetaminophen plus a diuretic (Diurex MPR, FEM-1, Midol, Pamprin, Premsyn, and others) may be sufficient. However, aspirin has limited effect in curbing the production of prostaglandin and is only useful for less painful cramps.

The main agents for treating moderate menstrual cramps are the nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), which lower the production of prostaglandin and lessen its effect. The NSAIDs that do not require a prescription are:

 

1. ibuprofen (Advil, Midol IB, Motrin, Nuprin, and others);
2. naproxen sodium (Aleve, Anaprox); and
3. ketoprofen (Actron, Orudis KT).

 

A woman should start taking one of these medications before her pain becomes difficult to control. This might mean starting medication 1 to 2 days before her period is due to begin and continuing taking medication 1-2 days into her period. The best results are obtained by taking one of the NSAIDs on a scheduled basis and not waiting for the pain to begin.

Prescription NSAIDs available for the treatment of menstrual cramps include mefenamic acid (Ponstel) and meclofenamate (Meclomen).

Home Remedies

Ginger Tea with brown sugar

Ginger tea has already been known to help stomach aches and now research has been shown it to relax tense muscles and ease menstrual cramps. Research shows that it is the gingerols that give ginger its’ incredible healing properties. Gingerols are natural pain killers that warm the muscles, put a damper on menstrual cramps and stimulate blood flow to the muscles so they can heal more rapidly.

Ginger tea is also filled with loads of magnesium and with vitamin C, which relax the nervous system and help to lower stress hormone levels. To use, put three to four ginger tea bags into your bath water. As your body soaks in the soothing bath water, its hardworking plant compounds will soak into your pores.

Just the scent of the ginger, as you breathe it inside of you, helps to relax your body, mind and your soul. It is such a relaxing scent. Let it fill you up as you lay in the water and relax.

 

Hot Chocolate with Almond Milk

This hot chocolate is made with dark cocoa powder and almond milk, both of which are packed with magnesium. Evidence suggests magnesium deficiency may be a cause of menstrual pain in some women and that restoring magnesium levels to normal can progressively reduce the severity and duration of menstrual cramps. Magnesium has also been shown to relieve back pain associated with menstruation.

 

Hot or Cold Treatment

Heat helps, so throw a heating pad into the microwave or fill a hot water bottle and place it on your stomach or back. However, for some women, a build-up of blood in their pelvis may be the culprit behind their cramps, in which case an ice pack is actually more useful than a heat pack. The cold from the ice pack works to draw the blood out of the pelvis and towards the extremities. Try using both kinds of packs to see which is best for you.

Facts on Menstrual Cramps

What are menstrual cramps?

Menstrual cramps are pains in the belly and pelvic areas that are experienced by a woman as a result of her menstrual period. Menstrual cramps are not the same as the discomfort felt during premenstrual syndrome (PMS), although the symptoms of both disorders can sometimes be experienced as a continual process. Many women suffer from both PMS and menstrual cramps.

Menstrual cramps can range from mild to quite severe. Mild menstrual cramps may be barely noticeable and of short duration sometimes felt just as a sense of light heaviness in the belly. Severe menstrual cramps can be so painful that they interfere with a woman’s regular activities for several days.

How common are menstrual cramps?

Menstrual cramps of some degree affect more than an estimated 50% of women, and among these, up to 15% would describe their menstrual cramps as severe. Surveys of adolescent girls show that over 90% of girls report having menstrual cramps.

What is dysmenorrhea?

The medical term for menstrual cramps is dysmenorrhea. There are two types of dysmenorrhea, primary and secondary.

In primary dysmenorrhea, there is no underlying gynecologic problem causing the pain. This type of cramping may begin within six months to a year following menarche (the beginning of menstruation), the time when a girl starts having menstrual periods. Menstrual cramps typically do not begin until ovulatory menstrual cycles (when an egg is released from the ovaries) occur, and actual menstrual bleeding usually begins before the onset of ovulation. Therefore, an adolescent girl may not experience dysmenorrhea until months to years following the onset of menstruation.

In secondary dysmenorrhea, some underlying abnormal condition (usually involving a woman’s reproductive system) contributes to the menstrual pain. Secondary dysmenorrhea may be evident at menarche but, more often, the condition develops later.

What causes menstrual cramps?

Each month, the inner lining of the uterus (the endometrium) normally builds up in preparation for a possible pregnancy. After ovulation, if the egg is not fertilized by a sperm, no pregnancy will result and the current lining of the uterus is no longer needed. The woman’s estrogen and progesterone hormone levels decline, and the lining of the uterus becomes swollen and is eventually shed as the menstrual flow and is replaced by a new lining in the next monthly cycle.

When the old uterine lining begins to break down, molecular compounds called prostaglandins are released. These compounds cause the muscles of the uterus to contract. When the uterine muscles contract, they constrict the blood supply (vasoconstriction) to the endometrium. This contraction blocks the delivery of oxygen to the tissue of the endometrium which, in turn, breaks down and dies. After the death of this tissue, the uterine contractions literally squeeze the old endometrial tissue through the cervix and out of the body by way of the vagina. Other substances known as leukotrienes, which are chemicals that play a role in the inflammatory response, are also elevated at this time and may be related to the development of menstrual cramps.

Why are some cramps so painful?

Menstrual cramps are caused by the uterine contractions that occur in response to prostaglandins and other chemicals. The cramping sensation is intensified when clots or pieces of bloody tissue from the lining of the uterus pass through the cervix, especially if a woman’s cervical canal is narrow.

The difference between menstrual cramps that are more painful and those that are less painful may be related to a woman’s prostaglandin levels. Women with menstrual cramps have elevated levels of prostaglandins in the endometrium (uterine lining) when compared with women who do not experience cramps. Menstrual cramps are very similar to those a pregnant woman experiences when she is given prostaglandin as a medication to induce labor.

I still want my killer heels!

Hey girls, we know there may be many and grave disadvantages, but this can’t and won’t stop us from wearing our favorite type of shoes.

There are simple tricks that we can put in practice so that we will still care for our body and look fabulous.

1. Look for shoes with thicker soles, so that it would absorb the impact of steps itself, increasing the time we can walk without feeling pain.

2. When we know we are going to be walking, standing or traveling for a long time, we can use a simple trick: bring a comfortable shoe with us. This way we can freely change out of them whenever we feel like it. Sneakers these days have beautiful designs, but flat shoes and low heels are great too, such as the cute and stylish ballet flats.

3. Also, we can always keep some sneakers in our car, and this way we can avoid the muscle ache that comes with driving with high heels, simply changing out of then as we reached our destination

4.Try shopping for shoes at the end of the night, when the foot is slightly swollen. If we will stand in them for a long time it will become swollen, and we will see how it feels, so it wouldn’t be unbearable.

5. Variate between low and high heels, limiting the time we wear them. We won’t get too used to either of them, and we’ll avoid the muscle ache.

For instant relief of aches, it is highly recommend to pamper ourselves with a nice feet massage and soaking it in lukewarm water. It will drive away the feeling of having our feet stuck in a painful pose we can’t get it out of.
 

Here are some tools to prevent blisters:

Alternatively you can try rubbing vasaline on those highly abrasion areas.

To deal with the nasty blisters these are what you can do:

• When using the needle to drain the blister make sure needle is sterilized with alcohol or boiling water.
• Don’t pick at it too much to avoid infection.
• Try not to detach the skin that covers the blister. It offers natural protection for the raw skin underneath.
• Aloe Vera is also an effective way to heal the blister throughout. Just rub some on the blistered area with the aloe vera and it should go away in a couple of days to a week.
• Before draining or treating the blister, buy a special blister plaster and put in onto the blister. This is medicated and will dry the blister, so you may not need to take any further action.

Love-Hate relationship for high heels

This week girly editor is going to tell you the pros and cons of wearing our killer heels. We all know it’s really painful to wear them at times but we simply can’t ditch the confidence it gives us.

You don’t have to stop wearing them, you just need to wear them the right way. Read on and girly editor will show you how…

First let’s look at why we girls go gaga over high heels:

 The advantages are crystal clear.

Firstly, wearing high heels boost our confidence, makes us look and feel sexy, attractive women that we are.

It also accentuates our curves at the right place by changing our posture, bringing our chest forward and pushing our waistline back.

By wearing high heeled shoes we can improve our height, becoming taller. An advantage especially to shorter women. Heels makes us slimmer by proportioning the body and making the legs longer.

The muscles in our body contract and relax. The calf contracts and adjusts to the angle we keep our feet in. Heels make them shorten and tighten making our legs look like we’ve been working out.

Last but not least, it reflects our personality and can give an air of authority, intimidating others. Great to wear to the office with a power suit as well as on a simple walk with our favorite t-shirt and jeans.

And reasons why we hate heels:

The disadvantages are less visible, however we can feel them every time we stand too much time in those favorite heels of ours or take them off at the end of the day. There are the problems that we cannot see, however, those can be serious ones, causing changes to our body that may be irreversible.

The advantages of accentuating our body only come when we can actually walk in our heels. Be that kitten heels or stilettos, we need to be capable of properly walking in them, without wobbling and limping, making fun of ourselves. We don’t need to do the professional catwalk, however we don’t want to end up falling flat on our face, disgracing ourselves in public.

The damage that high heels can cause to our bone structure is drastic.
Without the right position while walking in heels we don’t just look weird, it damages our spine and knees.

Girly: Do you know that heels that are two inches or higher propel the body forward, turning the simple act of walking into an awkward chore. They also point the foot downward, reducing its ability to flex and absorb shock. This leaves areas like the knees and hip joints to pick up the slack, which can aggravate and sometimes even cause arthritis?

We can easily get ankle injuries, hammertoe or bunions if not wearing a comfortable shoe, even end up with a twisted ankle if the straps don’t fit properly, holding our ankle in the right place.

While wearing heels, our weight is redistributed. By this all our weight is forced on the balls of our feet causing pinching pain. If we don’t watch out and force the pain, thinking it would eventually go away we will end up with Metatarsalgia, a common problem that comes from the pain of joints and bones in the metatarsal.

Knee joint pain increases with 26% while wearing heels, and this only increases, depending on how high the heels.

Often we make the mistake of not breaking in our brand new shoes for a big event by this causing huge amount of pain on the big day, bruises and blisters.

Hi there, it’s been a while since Girly editor blogged about food. This week we shall go for one of Singaporean’s favourite food, Hainanese chicken rice. Hainanese Chicken rice is truly Singapore’s iconic food, you can see it everywhere in almost any hawker or foodcourt and most of the time well liked by tourist too. However most of the time some are losing the authentic aroma, so today, girly editor show you some top rating chicken rice places that retains the authentic flavor!

Talking  about the history of chicken rice, you will definitely not miss out Boon Tong kee.

In 1979, Mr. Thian Boon Hua started a small stall in Chinatown serving Cantonese chicken rice. Building upon the popularity of his silky white sauce chicken rice and emphasis on quality service, he rallied his family members to establish Boon Tong Kee’s first restaurant at Balestier Road in 1983.

Back to the main attraction chicken rice, the meat is really tender even the meat is infused with the aroma of sesame oil.

Girly editor knows that you girls are all busy, so we have come out with some ideas that are less time consuming so that it will not be a hassle to prepare.

There are simple things we can do:

1. Plan for a short get away

Well, if you have more time you might consider a 2-3days short get away either in nearby countries. This is suitable for couples who stay with their family members, and would like to have a total privacy time with their partners. Places like Batam, Bali or even Pot Dickson and Cameron Highlands in Malaysia are great places for some fresh air and natural scenery. If you are there with an objective to spend some quality time with your partner, bear in mind not to join any day tour or pack your itinerary with the places of interest. Let every activity be impromptu so that you will not feel the time constrain for every activity.

2. Whipping up a simple meal, breakfast in bed

Who says that we can only laze on the bed of villas and resort? When is the last time you appreciate your own home décor? Because home is suppose to be some place you really look forward to after a long day of work and it’s the most convenient and cost effect place for whipping up a meal. A meal does not have to be as complicated as a 5 course meal. A simple breakfast can be food like waffles, sandwiches, eggs and sausages. Couple can spend more time snuggling in bed and feeding each other.

3. Simple picnic, sunset or sunrise view

Do you agree that the simplest thing in life can be the best thing in life? Sometimes all we want is a time when we can really keep our minds clear and spend your time doing nothing at all! If you think that every outing must have the purpose, you will realize that you are more wear out after the break. An outing with your partner can be simple yet lovely. The love birds can just lie around on a mat or in a tent munching on your favorite chips and soft drinks, reading the story book or magazine you always wanted to read but you never had the time or do wonders on your ipad but not for work purpose.

Be a better Girlfriend 1

Dear girls, this week girly editor give you tips on becoming a better girlfriend/wife. We know that you have read a lot of these but did you really give some thoughts on it? And it s never bad to recap as we will take things for granted along our way…So here’s how:

1. Respect

As much as you would like to be his everything and centre of attraction, respect his interest. Respect his interests and topics of conversation. You don’t have to act like you love his hobbies, but at least try to understand why he’s such a fan. If he loves cars, soccer and gadgets, understand why. If he just loves to be playful and immature, remember that it might just be his way of releasing stress.

Girly: This is exactly like how we girls get excited over make-ups and stuffs!

2. Be yourself

Never lie to impress him, don’t try to make him jealous, and don’t lead him on if you’re not into everything. Those things are wrong, and if you feel the need to do that then you don’t know the meaning of a true relationship. Be honest and open with him. If the two of you are mature then you will handle it correctly.

Remember girls, you don’t have to fulfill every trait on his dream girl checklist as no one is perfect. If he’s dating you he obviously thinks you’re attractive.

Girly’s Favorite Quote: He will love you for who you are and not what he wants you to be.

3. Trust

Don’t forget that he has a life of his own. Just because he didn’t call you back for 10 minutes don’t mean he’s been cheating. You cannot be his one and only focus all the time.

Your relationship will be a miserable one if you have no trust in him and you are constantly in the suspicion state of mind.

Lastly, trust yourself, trust that you are the only one for him because of who you are.

 4. Be pretty

Continue to doll up even though it’s been long since your first date. Make him feel that you are still putting in effort and looking forward to dates with him. You don’t have to be as hot as Jessica Alba to make him feel proud of having you around.

5. Be Independent

If you feel entitled to all of his time and attention, learn how to not be an obsessive girlfriend. Don’t be an “over protective girlfriend” let him go out without him feeling watched. Remember that he doesn’t need you for everything and that you are separate people as well as a couple. When he needs some space, don’t take it personally.

But do make sure he will always be there for you when you need him.

6. Listen to yourself

Don’t let your friends try to manage your relationship. It’s your relationship and no one else’s. You don’t have to listen to every piece of advice from your friends if you don’t want to.

7. Save up on that jealousy

Jealousy is a very dangerous thing. Don’t intentionally make him jealous. That will result with a lot of problems and difficulties within your relationship.

Similarly, don’t get jealous over every little thing. Be more open on things like him making conversation with girls or studying with a school mate.

8. Say it!

In any healthy relationship, you will have your share of conflicts, some tiny, some big. Remember to be true to yourself and try to abandon any significant selfishness. A relationship is a matter of teamwork and a symbiotic relationship, not a parasitic one, where a party gives and the other one just takes without giving enough back.

We do not expect things to change in a wink of an eye as everything take time. Especially in a relationship, everything takes two hands to clap, everything have to be mutal… to be able to appreciate.

1. Lashes need to be straight for a successful fake eyelash application. Do not perm eyelashes prior to fake eyelashes procedure; curly lashes are difficult to perfect bonding.

2. Mascara on eyelashes should be completely removed before eyelash extensions are applied.

3. Proper bonding is the secret to successful fake eyelashes extensions.

4. Use the eyelash comb to smooth eyelashes after the application is complete to make sure that no lashes are sticking together. Examine all fake eyelashes to make sure bonding is secure.

 Girly: If it’s not, look for your beautician for amendments.

5. After care; 2 hrs after eyelashes extension treatment – Do not allow water to contact lashes. 2 days after eyelashes extension – Do not steam face, use steam bath, swim or wash face with hot water. Do not use mascara on fake eyelashes, as make-up remover will affect the bonding of fake eyelashes. Do not perm fake eyelashes. Do not use a lash curler, as it will break both fake eyelashes and natural lashes. Do not rub eyes or fake eyelashes when washing face. Always pat dry lashes after cleansing.

6. Maintenance: The lash life cycle is about 100 days. Fake eyelashes may fall off due to the natural lashes life cycle or because of poor technique or negligent care .  Retouch every 3 to 4 weeks is recommended to maintain best look.

 Girly’s Verdict: On the average, eye lash extensions will usually stay in good condition for up to 2 to 3 week if given proper care. If you really can’t commit a free time once a month, girly editor would suggest not to go for eye lash extension. When the fake lashes start to loosen, it can be quite prickly to the eye and you will have “bald spot” on the thick lash which will make you look kinda funny. Another reason would be the trouble to remove your make up stucked in between the lashes.

But if you really want to try it out, Girly editor would suggest you go for saloon which are more reputable and mostly importantly convenient for you to go for frequent touch up!

Hair follicles are harvested from the back of the head under local anesthesia. A numbing agent will be injected into the scalp and 100 or so donor hair follicles will be carefully removed and preserved for eyelash replacement.
